Pundits offer Manchester United hope with top three assessment

Penalties were order of the day for Manchester United and three leading Premier League title contenders.

Cristiano Ronaldo settled the scores as United overcame rock-bottom Norwich City - though Ralf Rangnick and his team were offered a helping hand by in-form Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.

The 30-year-old made several fine saves to preserve the three points at Carrow Road.

Raheem Sterling, Mohamed Salah and Jorginho also held their nerve from 12 yards - for Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea respectively - as the Premier League title race continues to take shape with only two points separating the top three after 16 games.

United are still someway adrift despite back-to-back wins under interim manager Rangnick.

However, with over half of the season left to go, the Old Trafford giants have been offered a little glimmer of hope by comments from Premier League Productions pundits Michael Owen and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Wright-Phillips said: "Leeds pressed in the way that we know Leeds do and they were winning those one-on-one battles. They were creating problems for Chelsea. That result was a massive result for them - but there's still a long way to go and I still see a lot of difficult challenges in games coming up.

"The top three can and possibly will drop points somewhere."

Owen added: "No room to slip up at the moment. You know what? A couple of the teams didn't play at their best on Saturday - certainly Manchester City in the early game.

"They weren't at their best and I've seen Liverpool play a lot better. Full credit there to Aston Villa in that game and Wolves for that matter.

"All three teams you'd say they're not at their firing best, but they all got over the line."
