Pundits make their Newcastle vs Manchester United predictions

Manchester United will hope to improve their recent record at St. James Park when they face Newcastle in the Premier League tonight.

The Magpies have won two of their last three home league games against the Reds, more victories than they had in their previous 13 games against them on home soil.

United lost this fixture 1-0 last season as a result of a Matty Longstaff strike and have not lost back-to-back away league games against Newcastle since December 1987.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a number of selection dilemmas with Harry Maguire out-of-form and Anthony Martial suspended. The United boss hinted that Alex Telles could make his United debut after travelling with the squad on Friday.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce confirmed his side will be without six players for tonight's game.

Match preview: Newcastle v Manchester United

Mark Lawrenson, BBC

"Manchester United have not had any problems scoring goals. Unfortunately for them, they have not been able to keep them out.

"Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have only three points from three games, and they are lucky to have that many because they did not deserve to beat Brighton.

"It clearly does not help that United captain Harry Maguire is having such a bad time at the moment, because he has been their most reliable centre-half.

"I still think United will beat Newcastle, though, if only because I can't believe they will be as bad again as they were when they lost 6-1 to Tottenham. If they are, Solskjaer is going to be in serious trouble."

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Manchester United

Michael Owen, BetVictor

"Newcastle will be more than happy with their start to their campaign.

"A 3-1 victory at home to Burnley was a solid enough performance, and I think the Magpies will quietly fancy their chances here.

"United come into this in disarray. The result against Tottenham won’t be forgotten quickly and I think it may take a few weeks yet for United to find their feet.

"I’m going for a draw."

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United
