Pundits make their Brighton vs Manchester United predictions

Manchester United have been backed to win their first league game of the season when they take on Brighton in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off.

The Reds were beaten by Crystal Palace in their season opener but bounced back with a midweek victory against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup.

Brighton will be confident given they have won three of their last four home league games against United, though the Seagulls lost this fixture 3-0 last season. Graham Potter's side are looking for back-to-back league wins for the first time since November 2019.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the game and is set to welcome back the majority of his key players after rotating his squad in the win against Luton.

Mark Lawrenson, BBC

"Brighton got an excellent win at Newcastle last week. Just as they did against Chelsea in their first game, they created plenty of chances, which is a really good sign of how they have progressed since last season. They look a lot more dangerous.

"United are under pressure already but I think their defeat at home by Crystal Palace will act as the kick up the backside they need. I'd be surprised if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side do not produce a much better performance this time."

Prediction: Brighton 0-2 United

Michael Owen, BetVictor

"Brighton were impressive in their 3-0 win away at Newcastle last weekend with a couple of Neal Maupay goals in the first seven minutes setting them on their way to a comfortable victory. Young Tariq Lamptey enhanced his growing reputation with another stand-out performance at right-back and Brighton will be delighted to have got their first three points on the board in just their second game of the new season.

"On the other hand, Manchester United were very disappointing in their opening match of the new campaign and looked lethargic and distinctly off the pace in their 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

"Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can point to a lack of rest and preparation time between the end of last season and the start of this but he will be expecting much more from his team and I expect a fully-fired up Manchester United to come away from the South coast with all three points. I’m going with a closely fought 1-0 victory to United."

Prediction: Brighton 0-1 United
