Pundits in agreement with their predictions for crunch Newcastle United vs Everton clash

Newcastle United will be looking to make it back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they take on Everton at St James' Park tonight.

Jonjo Shelvey's second-half strike earned a 1-0 win over Leeds United last time out and could move out of the relegation zone with three points against the Toffees.

Meanwhile, opponents Everton are searching for their first top-flight win of 2022 and Frank Lampard will be hoping back up a 4-1 FA Cup success over Brentford on Saturday.

FiveThirtyEight, a website that gives data-driven predictions for matches, is expected an extremely close game on Tyneside.

They have forecasted a 38 per cent chance of Everton winning, with the Magpies just behind that on 35 per cent.

Pundits from across the media have given their views on the upcoming fixture and The Chronicle have rounded them up for you.

Mark Lawrenson - BBC Sport

BBC Sport Mark Lawrenson is anticipating a tight encounter between two sides who will be keen to claim the win given their current league positions.

"Everton got a good win over Brentford at the weekend in Frank Lampard's first game in charge, and he could give debuts to deadline-day signings Donny van de Beek and Dele Alli at St James' Park.

"Lampard really needs striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be fit for this one, though. He makes such a difference for them, especially away from home.

"Newcastle have got some new faces too, of course, and it will be interesting to see how they line up in their first game for more than a fortnight.

"Overall they did pretty good business in the transfer window, but it might take a bit of time for this Newcastle team to bed in. They need the three points more than Everton do, but I don't think they will get them."

Prediction : Newcastle 1-1 Everton

Paul Merson - Sportskeeda

In his Sportskeeda column, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson agrees with Lawrenson and is backing the exact same result, admitting that he would be surprised if Newcastle won.

He said: "I watched Everton the other day against Brentford, and I thought they were quite impressive.

"They play at a high tempo under Frank Lampard. They’re playing against a team in the Premier League's bottom three this week, and they will want to win this game.

"If Everton get beat, they get dragged into a relegation battle. If Newcastle lose, they’re going to think they’re still in danger despite spending all that money.

"Everton played quite well against Brentford, and I’d be surprised if Newcastle won this game.

"Everton did well against Brentford in the FA Cup, but I’d be shocked if Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek sat this one out. They spent quite a lot of money on them, and there’s no point resting your best players at this stage of the Premier League season. With Frank at the wheel now, I think Everton will be alright this season."

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Everton

Lewis Jones - Sky Sports

Speaking to Sky Sports, journalist Lewis Jones has made it a clean sweep for backing a score draw between the Magpies and the Toffees and doesn't think there will be much in it.

He said: "No time for Frank Lampard to get his feet under the table. He has to get to work quickly in order to drag Everton away from a potential relegation scrap.

"A win for Newcastle here would take them to within one point of the Toffees, who have been posting relegation performance numbers over the past two months so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by their current situation.

"I wouldn't be mega convinced Lampard is the right man for this particular task of making Everton harder to beat in the short term, either.

"But that isn't based on any real hard evidence, more of a hunch on the way he went about his business at Derby and Chelsea. Signs were promising in the FA Cup win over Brentford.

"With so many unknowns surrounding how both teams will shape up in what feels like a first game of the season scenario, I'm swerving the traditional match markets and heading to the cards market for a potential angle in."
