Pundits express doubts on Chelsea's prospects of ending Newcastle United's unbeaten run

Newcastle United will be looking to claim another scalp when Chelsea visit St James' Park on Saturday. The Magpies have already defeated Tottenham Hotspur, and have also registered draws against Mancheter United and reigning champions Manchester City.

They've lost just one of their last 17 home league games and have gone nine games without defeat in the Premier League. Newcastle sit third in the English top-flight and boast a six-point lead over Chelsea, who head to Tyneside in seventh.

Chelsea will aim to avoid a third straight league defeat for the first time in seven years and arrest their poor run of form under Graham Potter.

Pundits from across the media have also been giving their predictions ahead of the game and Chronicle Live have rounded them up for you.

Chris Sutton

Sutton said in his weekly BBC Sport column: "Chelsea were very disappointing against Arsenal last weekend. The Gunners looked like a side who had an identity - while the Blues didn't appear to have a clear idea of what they would do when they came forward, or link up well at all.

"Newcastle will stay in the top four whatever happens in this game, and they must be delighted with their recent results that have put them there, as well as the way they have been playing

"I think we will see more of the same here. I don't expect this to be a high-scoring game, but I am backing the Magpies to make it five league wins in a row."

Sutton's prediction: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

Paul Merson

Merson wrote in Sportskeeda: "Newcastle are absolutely flying at the moment. If they win this game, they will fancy their chances in the top-four race. The name of the game is to beat lesser teams and avoid defeat against the big clubs.

"Newcastle have got to be careful and they need to make sure they don't get caught up in the occasion. I think this game will end in a draw - I don't see Chelsea winning, and that's a big compliment to Newcastle."

Merson's prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea

Mark Lawrenson

Lawrenson revealed in his Paddy Power predictions: "Newcastle are absolutely rampant at the moment and they’ve made themselves very difficult to play against and score against.

"They’re playing with a lot of freedom and I think they’ll win this one. The other thing with Newcastle is that they’re big and strong and you’ve got to fight them. Chelsea are wobbling at the moment I really don’t fancy them here."

Lawro's prediction: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea
