Pundits disagree over 'tight' West Ham vs Newcastle United Premier League prediction

Chris Sutton and Mark Lawrenson have disagreed over Newcastle United's chances of claiming all three points in their Premier League clash with West Ham on Wednesday evening, with the latter believing that the hosts can prevent the Magpies from walking away victorious.

Newcastle will be looking to follow up their superb 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday with an equally dominant performance against West Ham. Victory for Eddie Howe's side would keep them in third place regardless of the result when the Red Devils and Brentford meet, also kicking-off at the same time.

West Ham were victorious over the weekend as well as they beat relegation rivals Southampton 1-0 at home. The Hammers will no doubt look for the same home advantage to help them put a dent in Newcastle's Champions League march.

Ahead of what will is set to be a thrilling game of football, here's what the pundits think will happen when Newcastle take on West Ham on Wednesday evening.

Chris Sutton - BBC Sport

Writing in his latest BBC Sport column, Sutton said: "It is so tight at the bottom that one win makes a massive difference - look at West Ham, who were second bottom before they beat Southampton on Sunday.

"If the Hammers had lost, then there's a good chance David Moyes would have been sacked but they just about got over the line. Newcastle are a much better team than the Saints are, though, and I am really impressed with the way they are playing at the moment.

"The fact they can bring Callum Wilson off the bench shows the quality of their squad and having him and Alexander Isak fighting for their place up front is bringing the best out of them.

"I can see this being a tight affair but will West Ham score? I am going to say no, they won't. I don't see them taking the game to Newcastle, so there might be a few grumbles from the home fans if they do lose this one."

Score prediction: West Ham 0-1 Newcastle United

Mark Lawrenson - Paddy Power

Lawrenson told Paddy Power: "West Ham got a big win at the weekend. It wasn’t brilliant but all you can do in that position is win. Newcastle were very good against Manchester United and thoroughly deserved the win.

"It looks like they’re back to their clean-sheet best which is the basis for that. West Ham don’t normally lose too many at home in the league, though."

Score prediction: West Ham 1-1 Newcastle United
