Pundits disagree on Man City vs Chelsea Premier League prediction

Two leading pundits have been unable to agree on a result in the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Chelsea, offering differing outcomes.

The two sides will meet later this month in the Champions League final and have a dress rehearsal on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium, where a win for City will see them clinch the Premier League title.

Chelsea have their own battles though, as they hunt for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification next season, and Thomas Tuchel's side have proved their credentials by knocking City out of the FA Cup earlier this season.

While defeat for City would only delay the title celebrations, it could prove to be disastrous for a Chelsea side that sits just three points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham.

However, former Liverpool ace Mark Lawrenson believes that will be the case as he feels City will secure the win they require to clinch the title.

"It's difficult to second-guess Guardiola 's team selection but I'd expect Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to pick a strong side," Lawrenson told BBC Sport, predicting a 2-0 win for the hosts.

"Chelsea are still fighting for fourth place - to make sure they are in the Champions League next year, as well as trying to win it this season.

"Tuchel's side fully deserved their win over City at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final last month but a stronger City line-up should come out on top at Etihad Stadium."

Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen disagrees though and believes that City will have to wait to secure the title as he backs the game to finish as a draw.

"It’s a dress rehearsal of the UEFA Champions League final at the Etihad as Chelsea make the trip north. This should be another intense tactical battle between two of the best managers in the game," he told BetVictor.

"What makes it more interesting is that both teams have contrasting styles. We saw that in the FA Cup tie when Chelsea took the spoils. I think they'll set up much the same here and try to hit City on the counter.

"Those tactics worked a treat in their midweek win against Real Madrid, however, City's much-improved defence will be harder to breach.

"For City, we know what to expect. Ball retention is a huge part of their game, so with that, coupled with Chelsea's patient approach, I can see another tight game evolving. It's set to be a fascinating encounter but it's one I think is likely to end all square."
