Pundits agree Manchester United should have had penalty in first-half against West Ham

Jesse Lingard was denied a first-half penalty after Mark Noble dragged him down in the box by his shorts, according to Sky Sports pundits Carlton Cole and Casey Stoney.

United were taking on West Ham in the Carabao Cup third-round tie at Old Trafford and were behind thanks to a Manuel Lanzini goal inside the opening ten minutes. But it wasn't long after that when Reds feel they should've been awarded a penalty as Noble misjudged a bouncing ball.

The West Ham skipper fell to the ground as Lingard took control of the ball and on his way down grabbed a handful of the shorts and shirt of his former teammate.

Referee Jonathan Moss waved play away instantly and with no VAR in play at this stage of the competition, there was no review.

The incident was spoken about at half-time between pundits Stoney and Cole, who believe West Ham got away with one.

"On a normal day anywhere else on the pitch it’s a free-kick, it’s swung in Noble’s favour," Cole told Sky Sports.

Stoney agreed, saying; "I think that’s a penalty, anywhere else on the pitch and it’s a free-kick, he’s got a handful of shirt and shorts, it’s a penalty., he’s got away with one."

Lingard earned his first start of the season in the game after his winner against West Ham at the weekend saw United stay level on points with table toppers Liverpool and Chelsea and in the Premier League.
