Pundit urges Matty Longstaff to make 'sensible decision' and re-sign for Newcastle United

The "sensible decision" for Matty Longstaff would be to re-sign for Newcastle United.

That's the view of pundit and former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who believes the 20-year-old should continue his footballing development at St James' Park.

United have revived talks with the Academy graduate in a last-ditch bid to convince the England under-20 international to sign a new deal on Tyneside.

Longstaff remains a free agent following talks with Leeds United and Serie A outfit Udinese, while German club Schalke 04 also hold an interest in the midfielder.

Steve Bruce has frequently stressed his desire for Longstaff to remain at the club, and it is a view which is shared by Robinson.

The former Tottenham and Blackburn Rovers shot-stopper believes the 20-year-old is already a "top player", and reckons the "opportunity" is there for him to shine in black-and-white.

Robinson told Football Insider: "I think it’s important.

“Newcastle, to be fair to them, they did all they could. There was an offer from Italy but there wasn’t much difference in wages.

“For me, for a young homegrown lad coming through the academy with his ability, I certainly wouldn’t have been thinking about leaving Newcastle. His opportunity is at his hometown club.

“I think he’s a top player, and I think he’s going to go on to become a better player, but I think the sensible decision for him as a player would be to re-sign for Newcastle."
