Pundit tips Matty Longstaff stay amid Newcastle United takeover talk

Kevin Phillips believes the takeover talk surrounding Newcastle United will convince Matty Longstaff to put pen to paper on a new deal at St James' Park.

Longstaff has been the breakout star of Newcastle's season, scoring home and away against Manchester United.

But the 20-year-old academy graduate is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to pen a new deal at the club.

It has led to interest from clubs like Arsenal, Ajax, Club Brugge, Marseille, AC Milan among others and there remains uncertainty about the England under-20 international's future.

But former Sunderland and England forward, Phillips, believes the potential of Newcastle, should a proposed Saudi-led takeover be completed, will be enough to convince Longstaff to extend his stay on Tyneside.

“I would have to put my player’s head on and I would want to stay," Phillips told Football Insider.

“You can sense something brewing. If the takeover goes through you would be thinking quality players are going to come in and you would have the chance to play with them. You would want to challenge for a place in that team.

“I would be more inclined to stay, sign a deal and look forward to watching the club develop over the next four or five years.

“If they do what Manchester City did you will be staying at a club that will be challenging for things.”
