Pundit takes issue with criticism levelled at Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton

Don Goodman has taken issue with Chris Hughton's reputation as a defensive manager.

Hughton left Brighton a year ago after fans became frustrated with the team's style of play. He returned to football last week after being named Nottingham Forest boss.

Sky Sports pundit Goodman says Hughton played good football when he took Brighton to promotion to the Premier League.

"It's really hard to have doubt he's the right man for the job. It doesn't remove the problems that are the football club at this moment," he said on Sky's EFL Podcast.

"You don't wave a magic wand and the problems that were there under Sabri Lamouchi disappear, although it's incredible how often change happens quickly.

"His track record is excellent. He knows the league. I think he's been unfairly labelled as a pragmatic coach.

"When he got Brighton promoted I think they were the fifth top scorers. The season before they were the top scorers.

"I think he was only pragmatic when he got Brighton up because they couldn't go toe-to-toe with the big clubs every week.

"He did what he needed to do to keep Brighton up. He's as good a manager as Nottingham Forest could get at the moment."
