Pundit suggests Manchester City striker transfer plan which could save them £150m

Kevin Phillips thinks Danny Ings represents a sensible transfer alternative to Harry Kane for Manchester City this summer.

The Premier League Golden Boot winner is no stranger to scoring goals and he believes that Southampton's Ings could offer the Blues value in front in attack next season, that's if their pursuit of Kane comes to an end - Tottenham are still insisting he's not for sale.

Kane has made it clear it's his desire to leave Spurs for pastures new with the hope of winning silverware, something that he's incredibly gone without across his career in London despite establishing himself as one of the world's finest centre-forwards.

Ings is now heading into the final year of his contract at Southampton and he would clearly make a cheaper alternative to Kane, who Tottenham reportedly value at £150m, and Phillips thinks the Saints forward would be capable of delivering goals at the Etihad.

“It won’t happen now, which is huge for Tottenham. Guardiola has already come out and said that’s too much for Man City to pay. So I’d be surprised now if Kane does end up going to Man City," Phillips told the Football Insider.

“They can afford it but he’s not going to be an asset that in four or five years you get your money back for him. So you can sort of write that money off. Guardiola’s has already shown that he’s not fussed about playing with an out-and-out striker.

"But Danny Ings is obviously a much cheaper option. Would he give you the goals that Harry Kane would? No, but he’s a good player and he’s shown what he can do with Southampton.

“If he was to go to Man City then he’d get more chances. He’s a goalscorer and he works his socks off. We know City like to press and he can do that.“
