Pundit says he'd be 'stunned' if Tottenham signed Newcastle star Ayoze Perez

Former England defender Danny Mills says he would be stunned if Tottenham signed Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez this summer.

Perez is a summer target for a number of European clubs and reports in Italy yesterday claimed that the North London side are keen to beat Napoli to his signature.

It is believed Perez is undecided on his future this summer but clubs are becoming increasingly confident they can prise the former Tenerife forward away from St James' Park.

Perez has spent five seasons on Tyneside and is out of contract next summer. The 25-year-old is waiting to learn if manager Rafa Benitez will sign a new Magpies contract, while Perez is also keen to see whether he himself will be offered an extension on improved terms.

Even if those things happen, Perez has made no secret of his desire to win a call-up to the Spanish national team. Despite a brilliant end of the season, he missed out on Luis Enrique's latest squad and the fear is that Perez may believe he cannot fulfill his international dream at Newcastle.

Perez scored 13 goals for Newcastle last season but although demand is high for the player, Mills is not convinced of his quality.

And the former Leeds, Middlesbrough and Manchester City defender would not only be 'stunned' if Tottenham sign him but he has also urged Newcastle to cash in on him should a bid be made.

"I’d been stunned if Tottenham signed him,” Mills told Football Insider.

“He has been at Newcastle for five years and had half a good season. He has hardly ripped up any trees.

“if you can get a big fee, sell him. I would go for it if I was Newcastle. He is certainly replaceable, especially if they can get decent money to invest back into the team.”
