Pundit queries Everton fans' objections to deal for Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff

A pundit has queried why Everton fans objected to their club reportedly trying to sign “squad player” Sean Longstaff for £1m this week.

It was reported in the Daily Mail this week that Everton had put in a bid of about £1m for Sean Longstaff, with Toffees boss Rafa Benitez still seemingly enamoured with the midfielder.

However, the low bid was rejected by Newcastle United and was also greeted with criticism from some Everton fans, who wondered why their club was trying to sign Sean Longstaff.

Responding to the criticism, former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny told Football Insider : “I don’t get why Everton fans would be annoyed with that. I saw some on social media saying he is essentially just another Tom Davies.

“It’s £1m. That is absolutely nothing these days. He’s a squad player, he’s not a marquee signing.

“Longstaff played his best football under Rafa and I think he would like a few more friends beside him.

“£1m is an absolute snip if you can get him back to how he was playing a few years ago.

“It’s not quite happened for him since Rafa left Newcastle so maybe that is what he needs to restart his career.

“I think it works for everyone and Longstaff probably doesn’t have a future at Newcastle considering all their new money.”

Longstaff was deemed surplus to requirements at the hour mark by Newcastle boss Eddie Howe during yesterday’s FA Cup loss at home to League One Cambridge United. He has started nine matches this season and got one assist and one goal.
