Pundit praises Newcastle United star and claims he is being let down by his team-mates

Martin Dubravka is making "world-class saves" but is being let down by some of his Newcastle United team-mates.

That's the view of former Sunderland and England striker Darren Bent, who believes several in the Magpies' starting XI need to "step up" to arrest their slump.

The defeat at Selhurst Park means United have slipped to 14th having recorded just one victory in their last nine Premier League matches.

Steve Bruce's side still enjoy a seven-point cushion over the relegation zone, but the recent slump has prompted fears the Magpies will be dragged back into a relegation dogfight.

Dubravka was one of the few players in black and white to emerge from the defeat at Palace with any credit. The Slovakian international was beaten by Patrick Van Aanholt's free-kick, but made a number of stunning saves to limit the hosts to one goal.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bent praised Dubravka's performance but believes there is only so much the 31-year-old when the opposition are afforded too many opportunities.

The former Aston Villa and Sunderland striker said: “He was making some world-class saves, some absolutely brilliant, brilliant saves but it’s not enough at times.

“The goalkeeper can only do so much, he can make save after save after save, it’s very rare that you can make all these amount of saves and you don’t concede. If you keep giving the opposition the opportunity to score, they will take one.

“It’s a positive he’s playing so well but now other people have got to step up.”
