Pundit outlines key factor in Leeds United and West Brom's promotion chances

Leeds United's promotion chances may hinge on how they approach the January transfer window, claims Ian Holloway, with the former Queens Park Rangers boss expecting "more twists" in the Premier League race.

The Whites have been guided by Marcelo Bielsa to the top of the Championship this season and, along with West Bromwich Albion, hold a commanding points lead over the play-off places below them.

United fans are likely to remain cautious following last season's second-half collapse which saw them drop out of the top two, but they remain firmly in the hunt once again so far.

Speaking in his Mirror Football column, Holloway, who twice won promotion through the play-offs to the top-flight with Blackpool and Crystal Palace, predicted that next month's transfer plans could still dramatically alter the race however.

"I think there will be more twists in the race for automatic promotion," he stated. "West Brom and Leeds are certainly looking like they could do it, and they both have really experienced managers and very good squads.

"But it is all about what happens in the January transfer window. At the moment Leeds are spreading the goals around but there's rumours they might go for Dwight Gayle, which I think would be a brilliant signing because he's proved he can do it in the Championship.

"West Brom and Leeds are in a rich vein of form but in the Championship the competition is so tough and it’s never over. Neither of them have had a blip yet so we’ll have to wait and see."

Leeds next host Cardiff City at Elland Road on Saturday as they look to preserve their grip at the top of the table.
