Pundit names Man City star as player of the year ahead of Liverpool FC defender Virgil Van Dijk

Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness has named Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling as the best player in the Premier League this season.

Sterling took his league tally of goals this season to 17 after striking a brace against Crystal Palace, as City overcame another hurdle in their quest to retain their Premier League title.

The England international has been in incredible form this season and is tipped among the favourites to secure individual accolades at the end of the season, although he faces a fight with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

While it may have been expected that a former Red would favour one of Liverpool’s leading men, Souness instead elected to name Sterling as his leading candidate - but added he can still do better.

“You think he left this place [Anfield] when he was 20 years old. He’s been sensational and should only get better,” he told Sky Sports.

“17 goals is not enough for him. You look at him he’s not the most clinical of finishers. I think he would accept that. He gets into positions where he should get goals often enough that he should be getting well into his 20s in that team.

“I think he’ll get better and better. There’s still a lot more to come from him. I’d give him player of the season. I think he’s been fabulous. For all number of reasons that we don’t have time to go into.”
