Pundit names four Liverpool players in Team of the Year but makes bizarre Virgil van Dijk prediction

Four Liverpool players were named in Garth Crooks' Team of the Year.

The former Tottenham attacker made his selection for BBC Sport and included Trent Alexander-Arnold , Virgil van Dijk , Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane in the XI.

His report was naturally glowing with praise for the incredible quartet.

Liverpool verdict - No tears and no regrets as Anfield's response speaks volumes about Jurgen Klopp's Reds

Crooks labelled Alexander-Arnold's performances this season as "sparkling" while predicting he could be a world-class defender in two years.

Robertson also came in for similar glowing compliments with the pundit stating the left-back "could get into any international team in the world right now".

He called Mane " Liverpool's player of the season" who "held the fort" for the Reds and kept them in contention for the title.

Van Dijk, of course, was lauded with compliments too after featuring in Crooks' Team of the Week selections more than any other player in the Premier League.

However, the 61-year-old also made a bizarre prediction about the Dutch defender and Jurgen Klopp's side.

Why there is no time for despair as Liverpool fans should follow Jurgen Klopp's lead

He stated: "What Van Dijk has brought to Liverpool's defence is almost unquantifiable.

"I do feel however, that if Liverpool fail to win the Champions League , and that is by no means certain, it may hasten Van Dijk's departure.

"Players of his class need to be playing for the best team in the world."

It's impossible to call just one team the world's best and it may have escaped Crooks' attention but the Reds are set to play in the Champions League final for the second season in a row and could have feasibly won the Premier League title.

Challenging for both the domestic league and European Cup is something no team can say they have done this year - not even Manchester City.

It is then, fair to say Liverpool are there among the world's very best teams and Van Dijk therefore will be staying put no matter what happens on June 1 in Madrdid against Tottenham.
