Pundit issues firm defence of Leeds United star Patrick Bamford following fan criticism

Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has issued a firm defence of under-fire Patrick Bamford.

Despite scoring four times in 11 Championship games so far this season, some sections of the Whites fan base have been critical of the forward for being wasteful in front of goal.

But Whelan, who established himself as a fans favourite during his two year spell at Elland Road, has given his backing to the former Chelsea man, who he also believes has the backing of Marcelo Bielsa.

Patrick Bamford has done very well this season," Whelan told Football Insider.

"His performance against West Brom last week was the best I have seen from him at Leeds.

“It was as good as you can get without scoring a goal. I spoke to him after the game and he said the manager’s happy with him as he’s doing what he wants him to do–his work rate, running into channels, pulling defenders out of position.

“Can Eddie Nketiah do the same job as Bamford in leading the line? We won’t know until he starts a league game, but he is a different type of player.

“I know why fans aren’t happy with Bamford as strikers are judged on goals but his overall game is spot-on, he’s doing everything right, apart from putting away the chances.”
