Pundit gives verdict on whether Callum Hudson-Odoi can replace Eden Hazard after impressive feat

If there is one player's future that has been speculated on more that Eden Hazard in recent months, it might just be Callum Hudson-Odoi's.

While the Belgian international has been closely linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, the 18-year-old nearly left the club in January with Bayern Munich lurking - both have just over a year remaining on their deals.

Hazard has often played down any talk of a transfer but left the prospect open for the end of the season. He responded to chants from West Ham fans about a potential departure for Madrid on Monday night.

"They are wrong," he said with a laugh. "Now I am just focused with Chelsea until the end of the season. I just want to finish in the top four and in the Europa League we still have a lot to do. We will see."

So, if he does leave, could Hudson-Odoi step into his boots? With performances like last night from the 28-year-old, Jamie Carragher has his doubts for now.

The former Liverpool defender said: “That would be a long way off, he’s a long way away from that there is no doubt about it, but what he has done in the last two starts, he’s done really well. I think the big thing for me is he’s not just playing, it’s the fact he has put Willian and Pedro on the bench.

“We all get chances when there is a few injuries or suspensions but when you’re first picked ahead of an experienced player it’s a big thing. I’m not saying he should play every game and they should be on the bench every game but the fact he’s now willing to put him, and this was a big game tonight, he still went with him, so fair play to the manager."

Gary Neville has also been impressed but believes that seeing Hudson-Odoi play every game, might be a tough ask for the youngster at the moment.

Neville: “It’s only his 15th start of the season so he’s probably still a bit rusty on how he’s feeling as a football player. What I would say is he’s still so young, it might be that he plays on Thursday but has to come out of the team on Sunday.
