Pundit claims Man City boss Pep Guardiola should 'gamble' and sign Jonjo Shelvey

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola should 'gamble' and sign Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

That's the view of former Republic of Ireland international and Leeds midfielder John Giles, who praised the Magpies midfielder for his display in the recent draw against West Ham.

Shelvey registered his sixth goal of the season in the 2-2 draw at St James' Park on Sunday, and has established himself as a key figure under head coach Steve Bruce.

The former Liverpool and Swansea City playmaker endured spells on the sidelines under former boss Rafa Benitez, but has formed an impressive partnership with Isaac Hayden in the heart of the Magpies' engine room this term.

The 28-year-old's ability in possession has rarely been in question, and Bruce has praised the midfielder for buying into his vision for the team with a series of high-intensity displays.

Giles believes Shelvey's performance against the Hammers was the 'best display' he had seen from any top-flight midfielder this season.

The pundit reckons the playmaker's form could attract attention from the the deposed Premier League champions, and it could be the midfielder's 'last chance' to play for a title-winning side.

Giles told On The Ball : "It would be a gamble, but if I was Guardiola, I’d be very tempted to go for him.

“He has the skill, he can pick a pass, he can distribute it, he’s a well-gifted lad and he might be at an age now with the right manager, in the right team - he’d be as good as he’d promised to be years ago.

“I think he’d be made for Guardiola because he’d be playing with top-class players. I think he’d have the respect for Guardiola and, at 28, he’d know this is the last chance. It would be a gamble, but I don’t think you’d have to pay that much for him.

“This guy, when he’s playing, he’s up there with the best, but particularly now, he is as good as there is in the Premier League.”
