Pundit believes a return for Kevin Keegan would be a 'sensible' move for Newcastle United

A move to appoint Kevin Keegan in a non-coaching role would be a "sensible decision" by Newcastle United.

That's the view of pundit and former England number one Paul Robinson, who believes the Magpies legend could re-energise the club's fanbase.

United owner Mike Ashley's private plane has returned to the UK as fans eagerly await confirmation of a takeover that would draw his 13-year spell on Tyneside to a close.

The Mirror reported on Sunday that Keegan was being lined up for an ambassadorial role once Amanda Staveley's PiF consortium's £300million buy-out is finalised.

The return of the popular former manager and player is considered a "high priority" as part of gestures to "generate goodwill" among Magpies' supporters.

Steve Bruce's future as head coach remains the subject of speculation, and while Robinson has dismissed the prospect of a third spell in charge for Keegan, the former goalkeeper believes his return would "excite" fans.

Robinson told Football Insider: “For him to have a role in the club would be a sensible decision. It would excite people for historical reasons.

“To bring him back as the manager would be a nostalgic appointment, rather than a footballing appointment. He has been out of football for a long time.

“A top-class manager that is widely loved but replacing Steve Bruce with Kevin Keegan would be to go with your heart over your head.

“If Steve Bruce is not the man it needs to be a world-class, renowned manager.

“It is alright having all this money but they need to spend the funds wisely.”
