Punchestown Festival 2019 tips: Our four best bets for the week

The Punchestown Festival kicks off this week with five days of brilliant jumps racing ahead.

This meeting brings the national hunt season to a close with 39 races that includes 12 Grade 1 contests.

It is no big secret that Willie Mullins is always the man to follow at this meeting and he will be sending another formidable army of horses.

We have picked out some Closutton horses to follow and more in our best bets for the festival:

Paul Nolan's stable star looked all the world like he was going to win the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham.

He travelled supremely in the hands of Barry O'Neill but seemed to be outstayed by La Breuil who battled really well to the line.

There is some high-class opposition here and Gordon Elliott's Delta Work is a worthy favourite after a brilliant run in the RSA Chase.

But at the prices if Discorama takes his chance and there is some juice in the ground, he looks a sound each-way shout.

Carefully Selected 9/2 - Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle - Wednesday 5.30

Willie Mullins' patience with Carefully Selected this season shows the high regard they have for him.

A top-level bumper performer he was earmarked for the best staying novice hurdles but was never chanced on the ground too firm over the winter.

Cheltenham was sidestepped and his hurdles debut eventually came at Limerick last month where he battled well to beat Lord Schnitzel.

He will go to Punchestown a fresh horse which might not be case for many of his race rivals here with the danger that the energy sapping Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle could have left a mark.

Al Boum Photo 7/4 - Coral Punchestown Gold Cup - Wednesday 6.05

It is surprising that such an emphatic winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is not favourite for the Punchestown version.

But that is because of stablemate Kemboy's very impressive display at Aintree where he routed Clan Des Obeaux by nine lengths.

There is the suspicion though that Kemboy was flattered by that performance and his early exit from the Gold Cup made him the fresher horse against opposition that lacked the depth of the Cheltenham showpiece.

Al Boum Photo seems to be improving with every run and let us not forget that he looked like the winner before chaos ensued at the final fence of the staying novice chase at last year's Punchestown Festival.

He ticks all the boxes and it might be foolish to underestimate him again, especially if the rain came and the ground softens up.

Chacun Pour Soi 4/1 - Ryanair Novice Chase - Thursday 6.40

There has been whispers about this horse for a long time and he impressed onlookers when taking part in a Willie Mullins schooling session at Leopardstown in the buildup to Cheltenham.

However, this horse was not destined for the Cotswolds, instead running in a beginners chase at Naas where he obliterated the field.

The son of Policy Maker has not been in these deep waters but at 4/1 it could be worth a punt that he really is something special.
