The Tiger Lillies are the band whose sneaky tunes and snarling delivery were so integral to the success of Shockheaded Peter. But that show was driven by the mad genius of Julian Crouch and Phelim McDermott, and was developed over a long period. Working alone, the Tiger Lillies seem to think that they can throw in a few puppets and blow-up dolls and they will have a show. They don't.
I suppose you could say that Punch and Judy, at is best, is a semi-staged concert. It is fine, even enjoyable, if you just close your eyes and listen to the songs with their bitter and twisted tunes and ferociously funny lyrics, each a little blade in the heart. But as soon as you look up and see the shambles on stage - the inexpertly manipulated puppets, the pathetic little films, the wobbly set - you start feeling that this show needs a visit from a trading standards officer.
It is not the idea or the humour or the aesthetic that falls short here; it is the execution. This is a lazy show, and it doesn't deserve to get away with murder.
