Create smooth volume: step one
Shampoo and condition your hair with Invati exfoliating shampoo and thickening conditioner. Spritz a layer of Aveda volumising tonic over your hair and comb through to distribute evenly. Separate the top layers of your hair and clip them up, to keep them out of the way. Use a crimping iron to crimp the under layers of hair close to the root area – this creates texture and bulk – then comb through. Photograph: Aveda

Unclip the top layer of your hair. Use a soft brush to smooth hair over the textured areas. The crimping has created the lift for the finished look, but it remains hidden beneath a smooth layer of hair. Play around with the finished look with your fingers,

Keep your style in place all day by giving it an all-over spritz of Aveda control-force, firm-hold hairspray. This also gives it a humidity defence, as well as a healthy-looking shine. Photograph: Aveda

Create tousled volume: step one
Shampoo and condition your hair with Invati exfoliating shampoo and thickening conditioner. Use a widetooth comb to comb your wet hair, then towel-dry it. Using a conditioner such as this helps to prevent breakage that can come from combing, and sets the foundation for easier styling and long-lasting volume. Create tousled volume: step two
Blow-dry your hair until it’s about 50% dry. While doing this, use your fingers to lift up each section: this helps to create lift and body at your roots. Photograph: Aveda

Separate your hair into four sections on each side of your head. Lift up each section and gently spray Aveda’s pure abundance hair potion on the roots, then massage in the potion with your fingers. The acacia gum and kaolin clay in the product makes hair thicker by increasing its diameter and creating an abundance of texture and volume. Blow-dry your hair while using a round brush.
