Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi, Sancho – The players battling for Willian’s number 10 shirt at Chelsea

Willian looks set to be on his way out of Chelsea this summer after negotiations over a new contract have stalled.

The sticking point comes down to contract length, with the Brazilian wanting a three-year deal but the Blues only willing to hand him two years.

Last summer, the Blues lost star player Eden Hazard, and Willian took on his number 10 shirt despite a lot of speculation others would take it on.

But if Willian does leave this summer, who should be the next player to inherit it?

The latest on Chelsea's out of contract stars

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic has taken on the number 22 when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund, but has never had the number 10 shirt for his club.

However, for his country he has the number 10 shirt and plays a crucial role for his country, having captained the side on several occasions.

Pulisic could push for that number as well and really make it his for the future.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

There was a lot of talk when Callum Hudson-Odoi was close to signing a new deal that having the number 10 shirt was going to be part of his deal.

However, Willian was given the number and instead Hudson-Odoi is currently wearing number 20 for the first team.

But if Willian does move on then the 19-year-old will certainly have a claim on the shirt, and many fans would be happy to see him in it.

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech is set to join Chelsea on July 1, however it is still massively up in the air for when he might actually join due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Before the 2020/21 campaign does get under way, the Moroccan will be a Chelsea player and so will be given a new squad number.

At present, Ziyech has the number 22 with Ajax, the same number that Pulisic has got with the Blues.

Ziyech swapped that out at the beginning of the current season from the number 10, so he could head back into his old number.

It’s the number he had at FC Twente, while he also has had the number for Morocco before.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has not had much luck this year as he has spent his whole campaign trying to recover from the Achilles’ tendon rupture back in May.

Loftus-Cheek will be hoping that when football eventually does return that he will be ready for action and to play some part towards the end of the campaign.

For the next season, giving Loftus-Cheek the number 10 shirt might be a nice incentive for the academy product as he looks to get back to his very best football.

Mason Mount

Another player who has made massive inroads at the club this season in his first senior campaign for the Blues.

At Derby, Mount was given the number eight shirt, while this season he has been playing with the number 19.

Mount has been playing in an attacking role this season, often in the number ten role, so giving him the number might well fit into his future.

Jadon Sancho or Philippe Coutinho?

With the expected departure of Willian and Pedro this summer, Ziyech could well be just one of two winger options coming in.

A couple of names have been linked already, with Jadon Sancho and Philippe Coutinho potentially on their way.

Both players could well take the number and it might be a way to entice them into the club, if the Blues want to get them.
