Puffin season begins on the Forth as pufflings start to hatch

Puffin season is underway on the Firth of Forth as the seabirds settle in to their burrows.

The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, East Lothian, is launching its official 2019 puffin season.

The isles of May, Fidra, and Craigleith  will soon be swarming with puffins and their newly-hatched pufflings. The Isle of May is home to around 90,000 puffins between April and August.

Visitors to the centre will be able to take boat trips out to the islands or observe the birds using interactive island cameras.

Puffins are at risk from a range of threats including climate change, pollution and marine litter.

Alex Turnbull, manager at the centre, said: "With the Firth of Forth being home to tens of thousands of puffins during puffin season and the Isle of May being the largest puffin colony on the east coast of Britain, North Berwick is the ideal location for puffin spotting and to appreciate and learn about these wonderful birds.

"Visitors of all ages love zooming in on the puffins as they control our interactive live cameras.

"And to see them when out on our Seabird Catamaran Cruise, Three Islands Seabird Seafari or Isle of May Landing is really quite special."

Puffins tend to leave the islands by the end of July, so it's recommended to see them early on.
