Pubs make their views clear amid call for masks in bars and restaurants

Pub owners are pleading for face masks to not become mandatory for customers in their venues.

The Labour Party has previously said face coverings should be worn inside all hospitality venues after they became mandatory again on public transport and in shops in England on Tuesday, November 30.

But local pubs do not want to see them enforced again, with one pub owner saying he would not enforce it.

Simon English, who runs the Tappers Harker Pub in Long Eaton, said: "If people want to wear a mask, that's their choice, I'm not going to be turning people away if it's enforced.

"It's not my responsibility to police it and I'm fed up of that, our jobs are hard enough.

"But we don't know what's going to happen, but we're all struggling massively, as trading is way back compared to what it was two years ago and all I can see is that it's only going to get worse."

Mr English also does not want to see table services have to return.

He said: "It would be another nail in the coffin as we have this opportunity to catch up with what we lost, with Christmas parties.

"If restrictions come into play, people would cancel their parties left, right and centre, and I've already had a few older customers cancel their bookings with us.

"When we had table service before, it was awful, we can usually get around 300 people in and we had less than half that, along with more staff because you need more people to do that.

"It would be a massive cost we haven't got the money for, and the idea is to make enough money in December to play with in January so we can pay the bills."

Another pub has seen a fall in its number of customers in the past two weeks.

Ezra Watson, general manager of the Six Barrels Drafthouse in Nottingham, said: "The last two weeks, we've seen a knock on effect of people being more cautious, and this weekend will truly tell what it will be like.

"Business was picking up through October and November though, although we were not at pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

"When customers had to wear face masks on our premises before, our clientele paid attention."

Good Morning Britain Tweeted a clip of an interview with deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner, who said: "I think government should be going further with mask wearing, especially in hospitality when indoors and in crowded spaces.

"We've really got to ensure that people understand that wearing a mask, especially when in indoor, crowded spaces, can really help limit the infection being able to carry through those venues."

When confirming face coverings would be mandatory in certain settings, a spokesperson for the Department for Health and Social Care said: "(These are) temporary and precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the new Covid-19 Omicron variant in the UK.

"This update adds to the measures rapidly implemented earlier this week to prevent the spread of the new variant including travel restrictions and meaning all close contacts of anyone who has tested positive for the Omicron variant are required to isolate for 10 days regardless of whether they have been vaccinated."
