Pubs left waiting another week for decision on two metre distancing rule in Scotland

Publicans in Scotland are unlikely to hear until 2 July whether they might be able to reopen under relaxed physical distancing rules.

Nicola Sturgeon today refused to follow England by relaxing the two-metre rule that pub owners say will prevent most of them from being economically viable.

Boris Johnson earlier dropped the recommended distance to "one metre plus" and gave pubs, restaurants, hotels and hairdressers south of the border the go-ahead to open from 4 July.

Speaking at the Scottish Government's daily coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said the Scottish Government's scientific advisory group supports physical distancing at two metres but that she had asked it to review the measure.

Sturgeon said her administration has asked in what settings and circumstance it might be possible "to accept the risk of people not keeping to a two-metre distance".

The advisory group is expected to report to the First Minister by July 2.

She said: "Until then, the position here in Scotland remains the same. We are advising people to maintain two metres' physical distancing.

"Any changes announced today for other parts of the UK, while we will look at the evidence underpinning those very carefully, will not apply here at this stage."
