Pubs in coronavirus hotspots could be shut under new national rules

Pubs and restaurants in coronavirus hotspots could possibly be shut down under Government plans to fight the surging virus.

Boris Johnson is expected to announce a raft of new lockdown-style rules on Tuesday.

Many are likely to mirror the restrictions enforced on the North East last week, including a 10pm pub curfew.

However the Sun reports that the Prime Minister may also order pubs in areas ravaged by Covid to close completely, as Britain prepares for a bleak winter due to the pandemic.

The curfew came into effect in the North East on Friday, as part of a raft of measures requested by the region's councils.

The North East currently has one of the highest infection rates in the UK.

But the Sun also reports that the new nationwide measures were outlined to devolved leaders on Monday.

They could include patrols to ensure measures - such as the 'rule of six - are being enforced.

The tough measures are needed to combat the explosion in Covid-19 infections which had lead to fears that, by mid-October, there could be 50,000 daily cases across the UK.

The Government's top scientists warned on Monday that a figure like that could equate to around 200 deaths per day.
