Pubs hit with beer shortage including Birra Moretti and Amstel after lockdown demand

Pubs are facing a shortage of beers including Birra Moretti and Amstel following a huge spike in demand after lockdown restrictions were eased.

Heineken, which owns both Moretti and Amstel, is temporarily limiting UK pubs to ordering only three kegs per week to cope with the demand.

The beer company said demand for both beers had “totally surpassed” predictions after more than ten million adults visited a pub since restrictions were eased.

It comes as Scots flocked back to pubs on Monday after boozers were allowed to reopen beer gardens as the country moved to Level 3.

Heineken UK added that it is working “around the clock” to increase supply of Birra Moretti and Amstel to pubs.

There hasn’t been reports of any other beers where production has been limited to cope with demand.

A Heineken UK spokesperson said: “Over ten million adults in the UK have headed back to the great British pub, with many treating themselves to a much missed draught pint.

“Demand for Birra Moretti and Amstel has totally surpassed our most optimistic forecasts, and our breweries are working round the clock to deal with this high level of demand.

“We are working with our customers to offer alternative beers from the extensive Heineken UK range of brands as we increase production.”

It comes as drinkers also flocked to beer gardens for an early morning tipple to mark the reopening of hospitality, despite the colder than usual conditions across most of Scotland on Monday.

Scotland pubs must close at 8pm and not serve alcohol inside, although punters can drink booze outside until 10pm.

Scots have been enjoying their new freedoms after lockdown restrictions eased significantly for the first time in four months.

A number of rules changes have come into force this week - including the reopening of non-essential retail, hospitality and gyms.
