Pubs could reopen from June 22 under new Government plan, say reports

The Government is reported to be considering plans that could see pubs across England reopen on June 22.

Previously Downing Street has said the hospitality sector would not be able to open before July 4 - and probably much later.

But it has now been reported they could be open before the end of the month.

Whitehall insiders told the Financial Times that June 22 is the target date.

The hospitality sector has said that if pubs don't reopen soon then many could close for good and up to 3.5million people could lose their jobs.

The moves could also pave the way for reopening all cafes and restaurants - with cinemas, concert venues and theatres not far behind.

It has been suggested that pubs, cafes and restaurants with outdoor areas could be first to reopen.

Pub and restaurant owners have warned that the current two-metre distancing rule will make it unviable for many businesses to reopen.

Business Secretary Alok Sharma is reportedly set to argue that this can safely be halved in order to help struggling venues.

Last week breweries said they were poised to deliver 250 million pints in two weeks in order to get businesses moving again.
