Pubs can serve takeaway pints but not until April 12 as Downing Street issues update

Downing Street has dashed any hopes of a pint in the sun before beer gardens reopen.

Takeaway pints will only be permitted once Britian's beer gardens reopen in April.

The Mirror reports that Boris Johnson's spokesperson ruled out any hope that beer, served in a plastic cup, would be allowed while hospitality venues are still closed.

During some previous restrictions, people could continue to get takeaway alcohol from pubs even while they were closed.

But this privilege was withdrawn in England's third national lockdown amid concerns it was leading to large groups of people.

There was no mention of takeaway pints in Boris Johnson's roadmap, which vows to reopen pub beer gardens in Step 2 - from April 12 at the earliest.

Today Downing Street confirmed they will be allowed in “Step 2, from no earlier than April 12, in line with outdoor hospitality”.

That means they will be barred in the two-week period over Easter, from March 29, when people are allowed to meet in groups of up to six people or two households outdoors.

Step 2 will allow gatherings of up to six people or two households (whichever is larger) in pub beer gardens, restaurant terraces, private gardens, parks and other outdoor places.

Only in Step 3 - from May 17 at the earliest - will indoor areas of pubs and restaurants be able to reopen.

At this point up to six people or two households will be able to gather indoors, while the legal limit on outdoor gatherings will be lifted to 30 people.
