Pubs, cafes and restaurants in large parts of Scotland to close in bid to stop coronavirus spread

Indoor pubs, cafes and restaurants in Scotland will only be allowed to operate between 6am and 6pm daily, selling food and non-alcoholic drinks only.

New restrictions have been placed on the hospitality industry across Scotland, with harsher changes made in the central belt, where all licensed premises in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley health board areas will be closed for both indoor and outdoor operations.

Outdoor bars, restaurants and cafes will be allowed to remain open up until 10pm and will be allowed to sell alcohol up to that time (outside the central belt).

The restrictions will come into force at 6pm on Friday and are intended to end after October 25. Announcing changes to coronavirus measures in Holyrood, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that without these restrictions the country would return to the peak levels of the virus as experienced in the spring by the end of the month.

Should pubs be closed in rest of UK? Take our survey:

Scotland's announcement comes as coronavirus infection rates there rise significantly as the country recorded more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours for the first time.

Health Protection Scotland (HPS) figures released by the Scottish Government on Wednesday indicate 1,054 new cases were registered overnight.

The record high figure was published ahead of Sturgeon's statement at Holyrood where she is expected to announce tighter restrictions to tackle the virus.

Scotland recorded one coronavirus death in the past 24 hours, taking the total under this measure - patients who died within 28 days of first testing positive - to 2,533.

Both Wales and England are currently operating under a 10.00pm curfew which prohibits the sale of alcohol - both in pubs, restaurants and now supermarkets - after 10.00pm.

However this has been criticised by many who feel the rule is damaging the nightime economy while also resulting in floods of people in the streets at one time and also encouraging people back to people's homes.

In areas currently operating under local lockdowns, as well as the 10.00pm curfew, people can only visit pubs or restaurants with people who they live with and are not permitted to form an extended bubble.

This excludes people who live alone who can now 'bubble' with another person who lives alone.
