Pubs 'brought to knees' and face closure as energy prices soar

Pubs could be forced to close due to rising energy bills.

Good Morning Britain hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins welcomed Shekhar Nailwal onto the ITV show. He was forced to close his pub recently due to the energy crisis.

He said that he expects most hospitality businesses to "come to their knees" during the winter months when people are using more energy. Shekhar said that his own company was brought to "tipping point."

The guest said: "Inflation has brought us to the tipping point where we need to decide whether to stay in business or come out of it. It isn't viable anymore for us to keep afloat.

"Covid already was a disaster for hospitality businesses but we did get a bit of support from the government. This time it's totally unrealistic figures.

"We are trying to keep afloat however we can but I think in winter time most of the businesses will come to their knees. We have tried to make it work as much as possible. We have made this place a destination pub - people travel for miles to come to us."

He added: "It's unbelievable that we have to come to this point and decide whether to keep it open or not."

Fans on Twitter also expected other businesses to crumble under the ever rising energy bills. Others also pointed out that even customers would struggle to afford to go out due to their own outgoings being so high.

Sue said: "People won't be able to afford to go to a restaurant all their money is going on energy bills #gmb." Another user said: "Gonna hit the chippy's and everything else #gmb."

Carla said: "The @Conservatives think business and people have time and they don't...Their energy prices are rocketing. My butcher is going, the hairdresser I know has been told energy estimates are £10k plus in next 12 months. We need action now.. crazy situation #gmb"

Are you worried for the future of your favourite local? Is enough being done to support other small businesses?
