Pubs, bars and restaurants to face strict coronavirus rules as Nicola Sturgeon admits 'fury' at Aberdeen football players

Pubs, bars and restaurants in Scotland will face a legal crackdown in the bid to enforce stricter rules around coronavirus hygiene.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed the hospitality trade will be forced to follow the rules on table bookings, queues and background music and TV.

They will also have a legal obligation to collect and keep customer details.

It follows concerns that the policy, which has so far only been covered by guidance, was not being adhered to in a growing number of premises across the country.

Laws will be enforced from next Friday, with the police on hand to take action.

Ms Sturgeon also announced that face coverings must be worn with visors after confusion about the rules in pubs, restaurants and cafes.

From tomorrow (Saturday), face covers must be worn in libraries, museums and places of worship in addition to public transport and shops.

The new rules follow an outbreak in the north-east, where 101 people have been confirmed as part of a growing cluster of cases.

And breaches by Aberdeen football players have led to a backlash after they were pictured in a city centre bar last Saturday.

Two players have subsequently tested positive for Covid-19 and tomorrow's match with St Johnstone in Perth has been axed because the players broke strict rules governing sport.

Speaking today about their conduct, Ms Sturgeon said: “I’m trying to be diplomatic here - but I’m furious."

Announcing the new rules, Ms Sturgeon said the majority of businesses had complied with coronavirus measures imposed on hospitality.

But she said “it is clear there are some businesses where that has not been the case”.
