Pubs across Bristol raise a glass in tribute after the Queen's passing

Pubs around Bristol have paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as the nation enters a period of mourning. The Queen passed away peacefully at her home in Balmoral on Thursday.

The Queen's last visit to the city was part of her Diamond Jubilee tour with the Duke of Edinburgh in 2012. Yet pubs around Bristol seemed greatly moved by the sudden news of her passing on Thursday.

Allen Williams, landlord of the Queen's Head in Hanham, is an ex-soldier and served as a lance Corporal. He is planning to observe a minute's silence at the pub. Speaking to BristolLive, he said: "She was the Colonel-in-Chief of my regiment, so it has hit us as much as everyone, if not more because it's like losing one of our own. "

Mr Williams said there were no plans to change the name of the pub, but they do intend to change the imagery on the pub sign from the Queen of Hearts to a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Mr Williams added that he will be going back to the brewery to ask if he can put his old picture up of the Queen outside the pub.

He continued: "We used to have a picture of the Queen. It was a real shame as we had to take it down about a year ago because a reigning monarch is not allowed to be on the front of the pub. That's why a lot of pubs are called the Queen Victoria, because it's a past monarch."

In Bishopston, a spokesperson for Prince of Wales said: “The passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a momentous and sombre occasion. We send our deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this sad time. We remain open and welcome our guests to come together at this difficult time.”

The Old Fish Market in the city centre said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. We will be raising a glass to celebrate the life of a woman who dedicated herself to serving her country and her people."

In Bedminster, the Three Lions wrote: "Here at the [Three Lions] we show our respects to our Queen. Rest in peace xxx"

The team a bar and nightclub, the Queenshilling, commented: "We are very saddened to hear the news. You have done our country proud Queen Elizabeth!

"From all of us who look up to you Rest in peace your impact, professionalism and personality will always be in our heart."

The White Harte in Bristol announced it was deeply saddened by the death of the Queen and would be pausing its social media presence as a mark of respect. The Ostrich, which extended its well-wishes to the royal family, said it would be pausing its social media posts, but will remain open.

On Ashton Road, the Rising Sun remained open but cancelled its karaoke night. "Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, long to reign over us, God save the Queen. Sad sad day for Great Britain," it wrote on its Facebook page.

Some of the UK's major pub chains have published statements paying their respect to the Queen following her death. Wetherspoon, which has eleven pubs in the Bristol area, has shared a message on its website.

It read: "JD Wetherspoon extends its sincere condolences to the Royal Family on the death of Her Majesty The Queen. The company is grateful for the 70 years of public service which the Queen gave to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, to whom she dedicated her life."

Greene King tweeted: "We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and we are now reflecting on her years of service. Our thoughts go out to the Royal Family and we join the nation in mourning her loss."

Some businesses around the UK are closing and schools are to be given guidance on closures during the nation's period of mourning. It is down to each individual business to decide whether they want to adjust their opening hours or close entirely.

Official guidance from the Government states: "There is no obligation on organisations to suspend business during the National Mourning period. Depending on the nature and location of their business and the tone of planned events, some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the State Funeral, however this is at the discretion of individual businesses."
