Publisher to digitise old newspapers

Regional press publisher, the KM group, is to digitise its newspapers, which date back more than 150 years, after being awarded a £49,700 heritage lottery grant.

It will then make all 26,000 pages of the papers published in its Kent base between 1859 and 1919 available for free on a website.

Group managing editor Lesley Bellew said: "Instead of the fragile papers being hidden in a basement, the digital archive will give users worldwide a unique view of Kent history."

Editorial director Ian Carter said: "We are the first regional newspaper to undertake such a venture on behalf of our community."

Is this true, I wonder? Whatever the case, it's an initiative to applaud, especially given the willingness to allow free access.
