Public warned to stay away from harmful Old Kilpatrick palm oil fat

Parents and dog walkers are being warned to stay away from harmful palm oil fat washed up from the River Clyde.

The white deposits have been spotted on the shores of the Clyde near Old Kilpatrick, and range in size from pebbles and golf ball sized lumps to small boulders.

They are off white in colour and have a waxy appearance.

They can be dangerous, especially to animals and young children who are advised to stay away from them.

If you come into contact with the substance, the advice is to wash it off with soap and wash your clothes as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) said: “SEPA is aware of the palm oil fat in the River Clyde following a report made from a member of the public to our pollution hotline and shared the information with the local authority and Scottish Water to enable them to investigate and respond in line with their responsibilities.

“We would encourage the public to report any potential pollution to SEPA 24 hours a day at sepa.org.uk/report or by calling the SEPA Pollution Hotline on 0800 80 70 60."
