Public warned 'not to tear the pants out of' coronavirus lockdown measures

A senior medical advisor to the government says the public should "not tear the pants" out of updated lockdown measures.

Deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam urged the public to adhere to social distancing at today's Downing Street briefing.

It comes after pictures showed Brits flocking to enjoy the sunny spring weather at beaches across the UK ahead of lockdown being eased.

Prof Van-Tam said: "I think there's a dual responsibility here that contact tracing has got to go well, but the public have also got to engage with it and to take the advice about self-isolation, if it's given because you're a contact, very seriously."

He told the press conference people must be reasonable about their approach to the easing of restrictions and be "sensible and proportionate" with the freedom they are being given.

Likening the virus to a spring in a box, he said: "It's like having a spring in a box and you've got the lid on, now you can take the lid off a little but you haven't disconnected the spring or broken the spring in any way."

He urged the public not to "tear the pants" out of the slight lifting of measures.

He said: "This is a dual responsibility here of Government to go slowly and carefully and to take the advice from the scientists, of the scientists to watch this whole thing very closely over the next few weeks and of the public in general to actually follow the guidance.

"Don't tear the pants out of it and don't go further than the guidance actually says."

Boris Johnson announced on Thursday that from Monday groups of six people can meet outside - but must keep two metres distance from members of different households.

But it seems Brits were eager to get back to socialising last night as temperatures soared to 25C across some parts of the UK.

Crowds flouted lockdown rules by flocking to parks, beaches and riversides as the number of official deaths reached 38,161 in all settings, including hospitals and care homes yesterday.

People were pictured queuing for a takeaway pint at the Waterman's Arms in Barnes and then heading over to the riverside, where groups lined the pavement.

Down in Exeter, Devon, people lined the Quay as they enjoyed snacks and drinks down by the water.

And it's expected that more and more people will be out enjoying the sun from Monday, when the new rules come in.

As well as up to six people being able to meet up in outdoor spaces -  including private gardens - outdoor markets and car showrooms can also reopen.

Reception, Year One and Year Six pupils will be allowed back in class and while pubs were due to reopen in July the Prime Minister has said it may be sooner now Cinemas could begin screenings again from July 4 as well.

Shops are braced for a spike in sales of food and booze , with the Co-op predicting it will sell 3.3million cans and bottles of lager and more than a million salad bags.
