People watch through a glass partition as rows of tuna are auctioned at the Toyosu fish market in Koto Ward, Tokyo, on Thursday. It was the first day for public viewing of the auctions following a hiatus of about a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The auctions started at about 5:30 a.m. Observers wore masks and watched the bidding process from a public viewing deck and took photos as tuna were auctioned one by one with high-spirited calls from the auctioneer. The market accepted 120 observers a day before the pandemic, but now only up to 27 a day are allowed in. They are required to follow infection control measures, such as temperature checks and sanitizing their hands.
