Public urged to avoid gorse fire at Spelga Dam in Mourne Mountains

The public have been urged to avoid a Northern Ireland beauty spot following a gorse fire in the area.

Fire crews from four stations across Co Down battled to contain fires at Spelga Dam in the Mourne Mountains on Sunday March 26.

Plumes of smoke could be seen on the slopes for much of the day. Crews will remain at the scene overnight to monitor the situation.

Gorse fires ravaged the Mournes back in 2021 with untold damage caused to biodiversity and wild habitat.

A statement from the Northern Ireland Fire And Rescue Service said: "NIFRS are currently at a gorse fire near Spelga Dam.

"Crews from Rathfriland, Newry, Warrenpoint and Newcastle have been there throughout the day.

"The incident has been scaled back, some resources will remain to monitor overnight.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation. The public are asked to avoid the area."
