Public told 'do not be alarmed' after old military object detonated outside Bristol

Police and bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled detonation of an "old military object" in a suburb outside Bristol this afternoon (Sunday, December 20).

Avon and Somerset Police officers assisted members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team in carrying out the operation in Mangotsfield, which lies on the edge of Bristol in South Gloucestershire.

It has not been confirmed what exactly the object was, but the controlled detonation was carried out on Rodway Common.

The South Gloucestershire police team, officers from which were the ones involved in assisting the disposal experts, confirmed on Twitter that the a controlled detonation had been taking place.

Police also advised the public "do not be alarmed" at the loud noise that accompanied the explosion.

The statement on Twitter said: "Officers from local neighbourhood teams have been assisting the E.O.D with a controlled explosion of an old military object on Rodway Common this evening.

"Please don't be alarmed by the loud noise!"

The noise appears to have reverberated around the area after the explosion, with one resident stating on Twitter that they heard a "muffled boom" after her husband had been being out walking the dog when the teams arrived.

The user, named JoMo on the network, wrote: "Mr was out walking the dog on Rodway Common when bomb disposal arrived!

"I thought he was just coming up with the tall Tale to come home early and then we heard the muffled boom of the device exploding.

"Thanks for keeping us safe!"
