Public toilet which sold at auction for £75k could become cafe

A former public toilet block which sold at auction for a staggering £75k - more than five times its £15k guide amount - could end up becoming a cafe, with loos of its own.

The three adjoining cubicles, located next to The Victoria Inn pub on Newport 's Caerleon Road, went under the hammer last October, fetching nearly £20k more than the starting price for a two-bed terraced house in the Valleys.

And, while its new owners might have been feeling "flush" that day, they've since put in a planning application to turn the place into an eatery.

If approved, the application would also see the building, which has an sizeable concrete forecourt, extended to the front and side, along with a two-storey add-on to the rear.

Debra Bisley, who handled the sale for Paul Fosh Auctions on behalf of Newport City Council, said at the time: "Bidders were really engaged with this property.

"We had a total of 18 bidders making a staggering 158 bids before it eventually sold for £60,250 more than the guide of £15,000."

It's not the first WC in the area to undergo and unusual change of use either.

In 2017 a derelict Grade II-listed Victorian-era gents loo on Alexandra Road in the former dockland area of Pill was sold for £15k and converted into a tiny arts venue.

Named the Phyllis Maude Performance Space it's reckoned to be the smallest of its type anywhere in the UK.

Similarly, the former toilets in nearby hilly Allt-Yr-Yn also enjoyed a makeover as a successful cafe several years ago.
