Public toilet block sells at auction for £75k which is more than five times the asking price

A block of former public loos in Newport has gone under the hammer to fetch an incredible £75k - nearly £20k more than the starting price for a two bed terraced house in the Valleys.

The buyers at last Thursday's auction were certainly feeling 'flush' because the three cubicles, based on the city's Caerleon Road, went for more than five times its £15k guide price.

Located next to The Victoria Inn pub, the complex also comes with a concrete forecourt and has been dubbed "ideal for conversion," subject to the necessary planning consents.

"Bidders were really engaged with this property," said Debra Bisley, who handled the sale for Paul Fosh Auctions on behalf of Newport City Council.

"We had a total of 18 bidders making a staggering 158 bids before it eventually sold for £60,250 more than the guide of £15,000."

However, what the new owners will do with the building remains to be seen, although an unusual precedent has already been set nearby when it comes to change of usage.

In 2017 a derelict Grade II-listed Victorian-era gents loo on Alexandra Road in the former dockland area of Pill was sold for £15k and converted into a tiny arts venue.

Named the Phyllis Maude Performance Space it's reckoned to be the smallest of its type anywhere in the UK.
