Public tennis courts in Bristol remain closed despite lockdown change

Tennis courts at Bristol's public parks are to remain shut until further notice, despite the government lifting its closure order.

While some members' tennis courts in the city reopened on Wednesday (May 13), when lockdown restrictions were relaxed, Bristol City Council's facilities are still closed.

The government has expanded opportunities for getting outside, allowing unlimited exercise and the ability to access outdoor sports and recreation that allow for social distancing.

Fishing, playing golf, wild swimming and playing tennis are among the activities that people are now able to leave their homes for.

Although the city council reopened car parks at several beauty spots in response to the revised rules, toilets and tennis courts at its parks are yet to reopen.

A spokesperson for the authority said: "While our parks and green spaces have remained open during the period of lockdown, their facilities were closed in order to stop the spread of coronavirus and therefore protect Bristol residents.

"We are looking to gradually reopen these facilities following thorough assessments, and any necessary adjustments, to ensure that both staff, and members of the public using them, are protected during this difficult time."

Bristol is home to several public tennis courts overseen by the council, the largest of which is Horfield Common with 10 courts.

It also runs courts at Redcatch Park, Canford, Eastville, St George and Victoria Park.

With sunbathing and picnics now allowed and sunshine expected in Bristol over the coming days, it is likely that more people will be visiting parks than when stricter lockdown measures were in place.

Despite this, visitors will not be able to access the public toilets at parks just yet, for the same reasons outlined above.

The city council's spokesperson said more details will be released "shortly" about the gradual reopening of facilities.
