Public service bosses weigh up Christmas party coronavirus options

Federal government agencies say department Christmas parties will have to adhere to social distancing requirements if they go ahead this year.

The Australian Public Service Commission says it will not issue advice for end of year celebrations as coronavirus concerns cast doubt over traditional staff functions.

Questacon and the ACT Emergency Services Agency said staff Christmas party plans were on hold for 2020.

"We always have the intention to do a big celebration, although sometimes we have to wait until April," an ESA spokesperson said. "And COVID makes it even more complicated."

The ATO is still asking staff to avoid face-to-face gatherings and non-essential meetings to reduce any coronavirus risks.

"While the ATO encourages staff to celebrate their achievements of the year, in line with community expectations of how we spend taxpayer money the ATO does not corporately organise or host staff Christmas parties," an ATO spokesperson said.

"Several of our sites, including those in the ACT, have eased restrictions allowing for more people to attend the office, the ATO remains focused on adhering to physical distancing guidelines in order to keep one another safe."

The Department of Social Services said it was yet to make a decision about hosting a Canberra Christmas party this year, but: "any decision made will be based on department of health guidelines and ACT government restrictions," a spokesperson said.

Health said it would provide advice to department staff as well as ensuring COVID-safe practices are in place for any events.
