Public react after protesters breach social distance rules at Wollaton Park

More than 30 people broke social distancing rules and protested against the coronavirus lockdown at Wollaton Park while dog walkers and families watched on.

A group huddled together around a black anarchy flag at the bottom of the historic park with signs which read 'Police Wake Up And Help' 'End Lockdown' and 'No 5G.'

One woman shouted: 'No one is dying.'

Three police officers were in attendance, talking to protesters, and watching on, but no intervention was taken to move people apart as they breached the two metre rule.

Police at the scene told Nottinghamshire Live they did not intend to break up the protest and people did have the right to demonstrate.

In total, there was a mixture of families with children, young people and the elderly who held banners and stood together.

Dog walkers, bike riders and families watched from a distance on the grass.

More than 400 Nottinghamshire Live readers have left comments on our website about the demonstration, which kicked off at 12noon on Saturday, May 16.

One reader said: "We haven't been in lockdown and staying in for weeks for these (people) to spread the disease more and break the NHS."

Another said: "Time they grew up. We are all frustrated but this will just prolong the beating of this horrible virus."

"It’s because of people like this that we’re still in lockdown", another added.

"They need to go home," one female reader said. "Lockdown would be over if it was safe to do so but it isn't. We all have to get on with it and agree to the rules."

"Trouble is, if just 10 turn up, those 10 go separate ways, and could spread it to lots of other people," another added.

"Do as your asked and throw a little common sense in and we all stand a chance of having some normality back," added another male reader.

The protest was still happening when Nottinghamshire Live left the scene at 1.30pm.

It is not yet known if any fines were handed out.
