Public meeting held over harassment of Tinsukia teacher

Dibrugarh: Five days after a female teacher of Philobari Senior Secondary School in Tinsukia was forced to kneel down before a group of students who were protesting against fee hike, a public meeting was held at the school on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by prominent citizens, guardians, parents, past and present students, teachers, academicians and representatives of various organisations across the district. Terming the incident unfortunate, which has marred the teacher-student relationship, the speakers at the meeting strongly condemned the incident and appealed to all to be careful so as to prevent any recurrence of such incident in the future.

On Friday, the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) expelled one of its leader, Karna Buragohain, for allegedly instigating the agitating students, leading to the unfortunate incident. Aasu general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, in a video message, apologised for the incident. A video of the lady teacher lying down on the road with folded hands in front of the demonstrating students has gone viral on the social media, leading to widespread condemnation across the state. After the incident, leaders of several organisations and students of Philobari area had gone to meet the teacher at her residence, in Philobari, on Friday and apologized to her for the humiliation she had been subjected to.

While the state government ordered a probe into the incident on Friday, Tinsukia deputy commissioner has also directed the executive magistrate of Doomdoma revenue circle to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within three days. The probe has been initiated to find out the details of those persons who were involved in the incident or had instigated it. The Tinsukia inspector of schools will assist in the inquiry.
