Public invited to rediscover the history of forgotten Lanarkshire village

A public meeting to rediscover the history of an old Lanarkshire village is taking place this month.

The village of Sandford has often been forgotten about, but efforts have been made to change that as locals are invited to attend the event on August 31.

Located on the Kype, next to Strathaven, Sandford holds a rich history in rural Lanarkshire; playing host to many ancient farms and archaeological sites in the area.

And to showcase the village's proud historic features, a book is currently being written, which hopes to be published later this year.

The book is currently sitting at 160 pages and counting, however it's now calling on Sandford residents for input.

Villagers can join the meeting at Sandford Village Hall where the presentation will be held. It will also be an open discussion on Sandford's past and present where attendees could potentially contribute to the final publication.

Organisers are encouraging locals to bring along old photographs of the village they might have which may also help.

People can come along and share their memories, recollections of old Sandford as well as their thoughts on Sandford today as a place to reside.

Author of the book titled 'Sandford On The Kype' is John Young who has worked on similar projects previously for Stonehouse and Glassford.

The discussions on August 31 could contribute to the book expected to be published later this year (Lanarkshire Live)

He told Lanarkshire Live : "I thought it was time to put Sandford on the map.

"Significant research into this village has been collated and researched within the local and national archived towards the publication of a book which will hopefully be printed sometime later this year.

"This project will look at the development of the village from its earliest references in ancient charters to the present day and the villages continuing development within the rural landscape the and natural environment that attracts so many admirers.

"As well as the many ancient farms and archaeological sites that are abundant in this area, the book will look at important historical events that impacted upon the community and the people of Sandford who have shaped that landscape."

"Every village, however small has a story to tell and Sandford is no different."

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 31 in Sandford Hall from 7pm to 9pm.

Despite the relaxing of COVID restrictions, some rules will still apply to comply with ongoing guidance and hall rules, including the wearing of face masks.

People will be asked to sign in at the door on arrival.
